Walmart Pledges Honesty on Prices After Triggering Trump’s Displeasure by Katy Moore.

Retail giant Walmart is doubling down on transparency after a public clash with President Donald Trump over tariffs and rising consumer prices. Speaking at Walmart’s annual shareholders’ week in Bentonville, Arkansas, Executive Vice President Dan Bartlett addressed growing concerns about price increases tied to recent tariffs imposed on imported goods. His message was clear: Walmart will continue to openly communicate with consumers, investors, and policymakers about the impact of trade policies — even if it draws political criticism.

The comments come just weeks after President Trump took aim at Walmart on social media, accusing the company of “passing the buck” by raising prices. The president insisted that the retailer should absorb the added costs from tariffs instead of shifting the burden to American shoppers.

But Bartlett pushed back, saying, “We’re not trying to be political, we’re just providing the facts.” He emphasized that Walmart’s responsibility is to offer honest information, both internally to employees and externally to the public.

During the company’s most recent earnings call in May, Walmart executives warned that price hikes would become more noticeable as the year continues. However, they also noted that not all prices would go up. In some cases, costs are being offset through smarter sourcing, production shifts, or adjustments in materials by suppliers.

Bartlett assured customers that Walmart remains committed to its hallmark low-price strategy and will maintain competitive pricing gaps wherever possible. He also reiterated that the company will be as transparent as possible as economic conditions evolve.

With tariffs and inflation continuing to shape the U.S. retail landscape, all eyes will be on how Walmart navigates the balance between political pressure, profitability, and affordability for its millions of customers.
