With diplomatic developments out of Europe, where Vice President JD Vance met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome—part of a flurry of high-level talks on the war in Ukraine, transatlantic trade, and NATO commitments.
The meeting took place Sunday ahead of Vance’s broader discussions with key European leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also present for the talks.
The central topics? Ukraine’s ongoing defense efforts, NATO spending, and evolving trade relationships between Europe and the United States.
During remarks following the meeting, Vice President Vance emphasized the strength of U.S.–European ties, while acknowledging that differences remain.
“We don’t always agree on every issue,” Vance said, “especially when it comes to trade. But we’re strong allies, and I believe we have much to accomplish together.”
The Rome visit comes as President Donald Trump prepares for a series of key diplomatic conversations next week. The President is scheduled to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, followed by a call with President Zelenskyy. The back-to-back talks are expected to shape the administration’s next steps on the war in Ukraine.
Friday also saw indirect talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials, a signal that diplomatic channels remain open amid the ongoing conflict.
Vance continued his diplomatic tour by meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and later, with top U.K. officials—Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
The timing of these meetings is significant, as a number of world leaders gathered in Rome over the weekend for the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV, adding symbolic weight to an already high-stakes weekend of diplomacy.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, and with Washington’s next moves under close global scrutiny, the administration is working to reinforce its alliances and navigate the delicate balance of international diplomacy.
We will keep you updated on developments from both Washington and Europe as they unfold.
