We begin with a security alert for U.S. citizens in the Caribbean. The U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago has issued a warning urging Americans to reconsider any travel plans to the island nation amid rising tensions linked to Venezuela.
Officials say the alert is due to a ‘heightened state of alert’ and advise U.S. citizens to stay away from American government facilities, remain aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity to local authorities. Travelers are also encouraged to monitor reputable news sources and enroll in the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive updates directly from the embassy.
Trinidad and Tobago sits just off Venezuela’s northeastern coast, placing it close to a region experiencing escalating military pressure. The Trump administration has recently intensified operations against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, including military strikes on alleged drug trafficking boats in international waters.
Speaking last Friday during a lunch meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, President Trump issued a stern warning to Maduro, emphasizing that the Venezuelan leader had offered concessions in diplomatic talks before they were called off. Trump stated, quote, ‘He has offered everything… because he doesn’t want to mess with the United States.’
In addition to these warnings, the U.S. has authorized covert CIA land operations within Venezuela, further heightening concerns in the region. The U.S. government has long viewed Maduro as an illegitimate leader and indicted him in 2020 on charges of leading a drug cartel. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recently increased the reward to $50 million for any information leading to Maduro’s arrest.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander confirmed that the alert stems from potential threats against Americans linked to the ongoing Venezuelan tensions, underscoring the importance for citizens in the Caribbean to remain vigilant.
We’ll continue to monitor the situation in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean as U.S.-Venezuelan tensions escalate. Stay tuned to SNEWS TV for the latest updates.
