Somaliland seeks US recognition by trading a strategic base and natural resources. By Ehud Jones.

In a bold diplomatic push, the self-declared Republic of Somaliland is offering the United States access to a strategic military base and valuable natural resources in exchange for official recognition.

The region, which broke away from Somalia in 1991 and has since functioned with relative peace and democratic governance, has yet to gain international recognition from any nation. But now, Somaliland is making a high-stakes bid to change that.

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi

President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, who assumed office in 2024, is courting Washington with a proposal that includes granting the U.S. military access to a base located at the southern gateway to the Red Sea a move that would give the United States a stronger presence in the increasingly strategic Horn of Africa.

In addition to basing rights, Somaliland is offering up access to its reserves of critical minerals part of what it hopes will be a broader partnership focused on security, counterterrorism, and economic development.

The president confirmed that recent talks have taken place with officials from the U.S. Embassy in Somalia and the Pentagon. Notably, senior American military leaders with oversight of the Horn of Africa have also visited Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa, in recent weeks.

Though Washington currently recognizes Somalia’s claim over Somaliland, the leadership in Hargeisa is betting that geopolitical realities including the Red Sea’s strategic shipping lanes and growing global demand for minerals may help tip the scales in their favor.

Whether this offer shifts U.S. policy remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Somaliland is raising the stakes in its decades-long quest for independence, and it’s doing so with an offer too strategic to ignore.
