Kristi Noem Impeachment Petition signed by 140 Legislators. By Kathy Moore.

A growing movement to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has gained momentum, with 140 lawmakers now signed on as co-sponsors of the resolution. The latest additions include 20 new Democrats who joined the effort following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old U.S. citizen Alex Pretti by a federal agent in Minneapolis last Saturday.

The impeachment push was initially launched by Democratic Representative Robin Kelly of Illinois after the January 7 killing of Renee Nicole Good, another 37-year-old U.S. citizen, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis. The recent killing has intensified calls from Democrats for Noem’s removal despite slim chances of success in the Republican-led Congress.

Among the new supporters are Representatives Debbie Dingell (Michigan), Laura Gillen (New York), Lizzie Fletcher (Texas), Troy Carter (Louisiana), Gregory W. Meeks (New York), Sam Liccardo (California), Marilyn Strickland (Washington), and Robert Garcia (California). Several prominent Democratic senators have also voiced support for the impeachment initiative.

In response, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Newsweek that the agency “enforces the laws Congress passes, period,” urging lawmakers unhappy with current laws to pursue legislative changes.

The impeachment resolution accuses Noem of “obstruction of Congress,” “violation of public trust,” and “self-dealing.” It alleges she blocked congressional oversight of ICE and DHS, directed widespread warrantless arrests, ignored due process, and authorized the use of violence against U.S. citizens and lawful residents. Additional charges claim Noem misused her position to divert federal contracts to associates.

Representative Kelly, speaking at a press conference, condemned Noem’s actions as a “reign of terror” affecting communities nationwide, calling for her impeachment to hold her accountable.

The effort faces significant hurdles in the Republican-controlled House and Senate, where a two-thirds majority is necessary to convict and remove Noem from office.

As the impeachment effort unfolds, protests continue nationwide against DHS, ICE, and policies under the Trump administration.
