Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem addressed the controversy surrounding the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents last weekend, acknowledging confusion in the initial narrative and defending the administration’s handling of the incident.

In her first public interview since the shooting, Noem told Fox News that the Trump administration acted on the “best information we had at the time,” relying on early reports from agents on the ground amid a chaotic scene. She conceded, however, that “we can always do better.”

Noem’s original claims that Pretti was armed and sought to “kill law enforcement” were contradicted by widely viewed eyewitness video, sparking outrage nationwide and drawing criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including Republicans Senator Thom Tillis and Senator Lisa Murkowski, who have called for her resignation.

Despite the pressure, Noem maintained that she was simply enforcing the law as promised by President Trump, saying, “I’m just doing my job,” and dismissed attacks from political opponents.

The FBI is now leading the investigation into Pretti’s death. Noem pledged full cooperation with the probe to ensure transparency and accountability. “We will continue to follow the investigation and provide all necessary information so the American people know the truth,” she said.

Noem’s department initially portrayed the shooting as a violent attack against law enforcement, claiming Pretti intended “maximum damage.” These assertions, however, were challenged by video footage released shortly after the incident.

In a move to ease tensions in Minneapolis, President Trump dispatched his border czar, Tom Homan, to oversee immigration enforcement efforts. Homan spoke of seeking “commonsense cooperation” to reduce federal presence, but Trump’s own comments later contradicted this softer approach. On social media, Trump described Pretti as “an agitator” with a “stock” that had “gone way down,” referencing a previous confrontation with federal agents days before the shooting.

As the investigation continues, the nation watches closely for answers, with growing calls for accountability and clarity surrounding the tragic death of Alex Pretti.
