Michael Randrianirina announces businessman as Madagascar’s new prime minister. By Ehud Jones.

A major political shakeup in Madagascar as the nation’s newly installed coup leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, names a prominent businessman as the country’s new prime minister.

On Monday, Randrianirina appointed Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo to lead the government. The colonel, who was sworn in as president last Friday, took power after mass youth-led demonstrations forced the previous leader from office.

Rajaonarivelo, a seasoned figure in Madagascar’s economic and financial sectors, previously headed BNI – Banque nationale de l’industrie, one of the country’s largest banks. The new president highlighted Rajaonarivelo’s expertise and connections with international organizations as reasons for the appointment. He succeeds Ruphin Zafisambo, who was named prime minister just two weeks ago under former president Andry Rajoelina.

Speaking from exile, former President Rajoelina condemned the military takeover and refused to resign, though lawmakers formally impeached him after he fled abroad over fears for his safety.

The recent upheaval stems from a weeks-long Gen Z-driven movement that began in September. What started as protests over water and electricity shortages quickly escalated into a larger outcry against perceived governmental failures and leadership inefficiency.

With Randrianirina now in control and Rajaonarivelo installed as prime minister, Madagascar enters a period of uncertain governance. Analysts warn that the situation will require careful navigation to stabilize both political and economic affairs in the island nation.

We will continue to monitor developments as Madagascar navigates this political transition.
