New details are emerging about a dramatic collapse in potential peace talks and the aftermath of a powerful U.S. military response. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is under intense scrutiny after reportedly refusing to authorize high-level diplomatic talks with the United States—then vanishing from public view as American forces launched precision strikes on key nuclear facilities.
According to sources familiar with the matter, former President Donald Trump was working closely with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last week to broker possible negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Trump even proposed sending Vice President JD Vance and White House envoy Steve Witkoff to Istanbul—and expressed willingness to attend in person—if a meeting could be arranged with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Iranian representatives reportedly showed interest, with indirect signals suggesting readiness for dialogue. But everything came to a halt when Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, were unable to reach Khamenei for final approval. Turkish mediators informed U.S. counterparts that without the Supreme Leader’s blessing, the talks could not proceed.
Shortly afterward, the situation shifted dramatically.
In a televised address Saturday night, President Trump announced a series of “massive precision strikes” targeting Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan—sites long believed to be central to Tehran’s controversial nuclear program.
The timing is no coincidence. According to reports from the New York Times, Ayatollah Khamenei is now believed to be in hiding—possibly in a fortified underground bunker—and has ceased all electronic communications with top military officials, instead issuing directives through a single trusted aide to shield his whereabouts from possible targeted attacks.
In a chilling statement prior to the strikes, Trump warned that the U.S. knew Khamenei’s location. While making clear there were no plans to eliminate him, Trump issued a blunt warning: “Our patience is wearing thin.”
Khamenei—once prolific on social media—has remained silent since before the strikes, fueling speculation and concern over the regime’s internal stability.
Iran analyst Lisa Daftari, editor-in-chief of The Foreign Desk, told Fox News Digital that this episode underscores the impossibility of diplomatic progress under Iran’s hardline leadership. “This regime was never sincere about peace or compromise,” she said. “Trump explored every possible route—even secret backchannel diplomacy. But when Khamenei disappeared, it exposed the regime for what it is: duplicitous and hostile.”
Daftari added that Trump’s limited, targeted military action was not just strategic—it was essential. “The message was clear: America will not tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran. Red lines have been drawn, and this was a decisive answer.”
As the world watches closely, fears are growing over what could come next. Is this the beginning of a broader confrontation—or will it bring Iran back to the negotiating table?
We will continue to follow this high-stakes story as it unfolds.
