We turn to a critical development in the long-standing dispute over the Nile River waters. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has expressed his appreciation for a mediation offer from former U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at resolving tensions surrounding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, President Sisi confirmed that he has responded to Trump’s letter, reaffirming Egypt’s firm stance on protecting its water security amid ongoing concerns over Ethiopia’s massive dam project.

For years, Egypt has voiced strong opposition to Ethiopia’s construction of the $5 billion dam on the Blue Nile, the Nile’s main tributary, fearing it will significantly reduce water flow to downstream countries, which rely heavily on the river. Sudan, also downstream, has voiced similar worries, particularly regarding the regulation and safety of its own dams.

On Friday, Donald Trump announced his readiness to revive U.S. efforts to mediate between Egypt and Ethiopia, offering to broker a peaceful solution to what both Egypt and Sudan view as a serious threat to their water supplies and regional stability.

Sudan’s military leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, also welcomed Trump’s proposal, signaling a regional openness to external mediation in the tense dispute.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation with over 120 million residents, remains steadfast in its pursuit of the dam project, viewing it as essential to its economic development and energy goals. Ethiopian officials have consistently rejected Egypt’s concerns, maintaining that the dam will not harm downstream countries.

The Nile dispute remains one of the most complex and sensitive issues in Northeast Africa, with significant implications for diplomacy, security, and regional cooperation.

We will continue to monitor developments as all parties consider potential negotiations and the future of this vital waterway.

That’s the latest on Egypt’s President Sisi welcoming Trump’s offer to mediate the Nile dam dispute.
