The world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following a fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and training partners.

According to reports, Joshua flew back to Britain several days after the crash, which occurred Monday on a major roadway near Lagos. The vehicle Joshua was traveling in struck a stationary truck, killing Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele at the scene.

Joshua suffered minor injuries in the collision and was taken to a local hospital, where doctors later declared him clinically fit. He was discharged on Wednesday and advised to continue recovering at home. British media say Joshua returned to the UK ahead of funeral arrangements for both men.

Ghami served as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was a trainer and longtime associate. Just hours before the crash, Joshua and Ayodele shared videos on social media showing them playing table tennis together — moments that have since taken on heartbreaking significance.

Nigerian authorities confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with dangerous and reckless driving. The case has been adjourned, with trial proceedings scheduled to begin on January 20.

Anthony Joshua has strong personal ties to Nigeria. He has family roots in the country, briefly attended boarding school there as a child, and also holds Nigerian nationality.

Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world, as fans and fellow athletes express condolences and support for Joshua during what is being described as one of the most difficult moments of his life.
