Tensions are rising in Latin America tonight as Venezuela strengthens its military presence along the Colombian border. President Nicolás Maduro has ordered 15,000 soldiers into the frontier states of Zulia and Táchira, describing them as “well armed and trained.”

The move comes in response to U.S. warships heading toward the southern Caribbean. At least three vessels carrying more than 4,000 sailors and Marines are expected to arrive as part of operations aimed at targeting drug cartels.

On his weekly television program, Maduro directly attacked U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accusing him of extremism and warning that Washington’s actions could trigger disaster in the region. “Unfortunately, this gentleman, with his madness and extremism, could lead President Trump to the worst possible scenario in Latin America and the Caribbean,” Maduro said, adding confidently, “We will emerge victorious from this situation.”

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced the Venezuelan deployment will also include boats, aircraft, and drones. Talks are already underway with Colombia’s defense ministry on joint security measures.

Just last week, Maduro dismissed reports of the U.S. buildup, but he has since called on Venezuelans to unite. He claims thousands have signed up to join militias over the weekend. State television is now broadcasting recruitment ads under the slogan “always ready.”
