Uruguay and the DRC aim to strengthen trade ties. By Ehud Jones.

A historic step forward in international diplomacy and cooperation, Uruguay and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are moving to strengthen their bilateral ties, with a strong focus on trade, development, and peacekeeping appreciation.

This Wednesday, Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi welcomed a high-level Congolese delegation to Montevideo, marking a major milestone in South-South cooperation. The African nation’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita, led the delegation—accompanied by key ministers from Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

Uruguay’s Foreign Minister, Mario Lubetkin, spoke to the press following the talks. He highlighted the significance of the visit and underscored the shared goal of expanding trade and economic collaboration between the two countries.

“One of their first gestures,” said Lubetkin, “was to recognize Uruguay’s longstanding commitment to peacekeeping operations—something that has become a defining part of our foreign policy and national identity.”

Over the past 25 years, Uruguay has contributed military personnel to United Nations peacekeeping missions in the DRC. Just last month, around 200 Uruguayan troops returned home from the Congo, while another contingent departed to continue peace efforts.

During the visit, both sides signed several cooperation agreements and discussed future avenues of partnership. The Congolese delegation expressed strong confidence in Uruguay’s stability, experience, and agricultural expertise. Minister Lubetkin noted that Uruguay is eager to share its advancements in sustainable farming, with food and nutrition security emerging as central themes.

The meeting, held at the Executive Tower the heart of Uruguay’s government, concluded with President Orsi confirming plans for a state visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo later in his term, a gesture signaling deepening diplomatic trust.

As both countries look toward a future of mutual benefit, today’s dialogue represents a pivotal chapter in building bridges between Latin America and Africa.
