Democrats warn Biden to avoid reacting to GOP provocations. By Katy Moore.

Growing tensions within the Democratic Party as prominent voices urge former President Joe Biden to step back and stop taking the bait from Republicans. In the wake of a string of GOP-led investigations and partisan jabs, several Democratic strategists are publicly criticizing Biden’s recent media appearances — particularly his interview last week with The New York Times, where he defended his use of an autopen to sign pardons while in office. The issue, fueled by Republican allegations that aides were acting on Biden’s behalf, has become the latest distraction for a party eager to reset its message after a bruising political year.

Democratic operatives argue that instead of focusing on core issues like healthcare, economic equity, and democracy protection, Biden is playing into Republican hands by responding directly to their narratives — narratives that many say are meant only to provoke and divide.

One Democratic strategist said bluntly, “If Biden wants to be a voice on Medicaid or other urgent matters, that’s valuable. But talking about autopen allegations on Trump’s terms? That’s just not smart politics.”

The backlash comes amid what some describe as a growing identity crisis for Democrats. According to a new poll from the Democratic super PAC Unite the Country, voters now increasingly describe the party as “weak,” “woke,” and “out of touch.” That same survey revealed declining enthusiasm among the Democratic base in the aftermath of the 2025 election defeat and former President Donald Trump’s return to office.

Even former President Barack Obama weighed in during a fundraiser in New Jersey, calling on Democrats to “toughen up” and abandon what he referred to as “navel-gazing and fetal positions.” The message was clear: it’s time to go on offense, not play defense.

Still, not everyone in the party believes Biden’s remarks are doing damage. David Litt, a former Obama speechwriter, told SNEWS TV that while the autopen issue is relatively minor, Biden’s willingness to speak out could have unexpected upsides. Litt pointed out that Republicans have yet to confront the lingering Jeffrey Epstein scandal, and that Trump’s avoidance of it might soon draw more public scrutiny than any procedural criticism of Biden.

“If Republicans are investigating everything except Epstein, the question becomes: why not Epstein?” Litt said. “Biden may actually be drawing a contrast that hurts Trump more than it helps him.”

Yet others remain skeptical. Longtime Democratic strategist Garry South warned that Biden’s reemergence could backfire, pulling the party backward just as it tries to rebuild.

“There’s still frustration — if not outright anger — over Biden running again and putting Democrats in a bind ahead of last year’s election,” South said. “Now, every time he resurfaces, it distracts from the bigger picture and reinforces the image of Democrats as reactionary instead of visionary.”

The deeper issue for many Democrats isn’t just about one interview — it’s about strategy. In an era where viral conspiracy theories and misinformation can shape national policy overnight, Democrats are debating how best to respond: ignore, react, or get ahead?

“We’re learning that silence doesn’t work anymore,” Litt said. “If a right-wing post explodes online, it could quickly become legislation. Ignoring it is no longer an option.”

For now, the party is split between those urging Biden to retreat from the spotlight — and those who see him as a necessary, if flawed, counterweight to the GOP narrative machine.

As Democrats gear up for the 2026 midterms, the stakes and the internal debate have never been higher.
